One of its unique features is the Tranz Metro rail system, which moves about a fifth of all workers in the Greater Wellington region each weekday.
Recently the city's Courtenay Place featured another red-carpet Peter Jackson film premiere with overseas stars - this time "King Kong".

Early this century the council officially redefined the suburb names and boundaries, resisting the temptation to include the name "Jackson" in any eastern suburb name.
