Perhaps his most prophetic sentence was written for the March 2011 issue just before the 22 February 2011 Christchurch earthquake, when he had been discussing a landslip that had from time to time deposited a tonne of earth on flatter parts of his Lyttelton property:

"Now autumn's here and the only certainty about things that are here is that they soon won't be."
