The Chatham Islands lie about 800 km east of Christchurch (centred on a point 43°59′17″S, 176°27′13″W).
Earliest known settlers were Moriori.
The islands became part of New Zealand in 1842.
Chief town is Waitangi with a population of about 200; about 500 residents elsewhere make up the total, easily the smallest of any local government territory in the country.
Its economy is largely based on fishing.
